Decollate Snail
Decollate Snails (Rumina decollata) – Biological Control for Garden Snails
Decollate snails (Rumina decollata) are a beneficial predatory snail used for long-term biological control of brown garden snails (Helix aspersa). These predators feed on snail eggs and small to medium-sized pest snails, helping reduce populations naturally without chemicals. Decollate snails have distinctive conical shells and remain ground-dwelling—they do not climb plants, trees, or structures.
Ideal for landscaped areas, orchards, and irrigated groundcovers, decollate snails establish slowly but provide sustained, ecological control once established. They are most active at night and after rain, hiding in mulch and leaf litter during the day. Decollates do not typically attack slugs and are compatible with IPM programs when metaldehyde baits are avoided. Iron phosphate baits may be used only in open, non-mulched areas away from release sites.
Available in units for home gardens or larger releases for orchards. Restricted to approved counties in California.
